Spindle (and photo credit) from Butterflygirls Designs (via Etsy)

A few years ago Marie Mockett gave me a spinning kit. (If you haven’t read her fabulous debut novel, Picking Bones from Ash, go get it and read it now!) It took me a little while, but I finally got around to trying my drop spindle out. Most of my attempts have not been all that noteworthy (There will be pictures at a later date when I have better consistency.), but I had some revelations, namely a series of inspirational blog articles.

Happy Belated Christmas!

Monday, January 5th, 2009

No puppy was abused (much) in the compilation of this blog post. You’ll see he gets his revenge. I promise.

Boo! showing off his Xmas presents.

Christmas was a bit subdued this year because I had a fever, but watching Christmas come together was exciting.

Autumn Highlights 2: Mobile Art in Central Park

Central Park, New York

In early November I got to see the Chanel Mobile Art Exhibit in Central Park. Zaha Hadid has gotten some buzz in recent years, but I had never had the chance to see her work in person.

It’s Alive!

My internal clock must be off. I’m missing things left and right.

The very cool people at Tor have launched a brand-spanking new tor.com. It’s got news, fiction, essays, fabulous art galleries and oodles of conversations.

The site’s in beta-testing so not everything will work properly (yet). I was part of the sooper secret group testing the site, but didn’t have much luck breaking it. Other testers were much quicker and more creative about it. I don’t seem to be good at breakage; I’m much better at construction. Just like I’m not too good at being evil although I finally did earn my Renegade Achievement in Mass Effect (It took me two playthroughs to get it so I was my Renegade Badge with pride.).

Come join the madness in progress. Followers welcome!

Knitted Shaun the Sheep

My friend Kate found the kit for this delightful knitted version of Shaun. Now I’m addicted. Shaun #2 is already half done.

Deer Family Reunion

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

I’ve seen two different families of deer on my drive in California. The first family is a doe and a single fawn. They frequent my mother’s house. If I hear a cracking (dead) branch early in the morning it’s usually the fawn nibbling on dry grass or searching for a low hanging plum. The mother is a little more shy.

I saw the other family, a doe and two fawns, a mile down the road earlier in the week. The first encounter was at night and I was expecting them. One of the fawns was standing in the road with the classic look. I honked the horn a couple of times, but there was no reaction so I inched forward in the hope of startling it. No dice. I honked and inched forward again, but still no reaction. I was about to unroll the window to shout, but then the mother leaped into action and nudged Baby #1 out of the way. She paused for a moment and Baby #2 bounded by. Finally all three got off the road. Baby #1 needs some serious street smarts or s/he isn’t going to last very long.

This afternoon I’ve been enjoying their company, all of them. They’ve been having a picnic in the neighbor’s yard. Of what, I’m not sure. The ground looks pretty clear. One of the fawns just got nipped by one of the mamas. Baby #1 perhaps?

Unusual Resources

When you need a fictional band and you don’t know if someone else has made up the same really cool name, this web site is the place to go. This is the book to buy.

My band name wasn’t in there! Woot!

Rock on!
